Are you using your dry shampoo correctly?

Let’s talk about dry shampoo.

If you haven’t heard of the magic of dry shampoo, allow me to introduce you.

It is a product designed to absorb your natural oils in-between washes. It does not replace washing your hair. It does help to extend your wash.

What should you look for in a dry shampoo? It should be aluminum and talc free, light weight and easy to distribute throughout your hair. My favorite is the Amika perk-up dry shampoo. As someone with darker hair, this product does not leave any white residue.

Dry shampoo, like any product, can cause build up if used in excess or incorrectly. A common mistake I see is women spraying dry shampoo directly onto their scalp — this is a no-no. Dry shampoo was created for your hair, not your scalp, so it should be applied to the hair directly. Too much build up on the scalp can clog your hair follicles and stunt hair growth.

To avoid build up and to correctly use your dry shampoo:

  • Start by parting your hair with a comb how you’d like to wear it that day.

  • Take a horizontal section, about an inch in width, and hold the hair directly out from where it lives.

  • Holding the bottle at least 6 inches away, spray the dry shampoo onto your hair, avoiding the scalp.

  • Continue with another inch wide section working down your head.

  • Use your hands to rub the dry shampoo lightly, evenly distributing the product throughout your hair.

  • You can blow dry the product in using a round brush for extra volume.

  • Enjoy your day two, or if you’re like me, maybe day three, four or five hair!
